Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently posted this video asking the world for more weapons. This is a thorny problem. Weapons are durable and fungible, and no doubt many of those that we give to Ukraine will be captured and either sold to our enemies or used against the west at some point. However, there is an opportunity here to help Ukraine defeat Russia so badly that they will not be a threat to the west for generations to come.

It’s a gamble either way. If we refuse to arm Ukraine and they end up losing their country, Russia will likely not stop there and will eventually move on Moldova or even Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, or Sweden. That becomes a very real possibility if Putin is successful in taking Ukraine. So the west has a vested interest in making sure that doesn’t happen. Right now the Ukrainians are willing to fight Russia as proxies of the west in order to save their own country, but without the west’s help they likely will not be successful in the end. Western aid has already made a huge difference in this war.
