The "Jericho Wall" Plan - Pride Goes Before A Fall.
I recently read the book "Eighteen Days in October -
The Yom Kippur War and How It Created the Modern Middle East" by Uri Kaufmann. It details the events that led to the 1973 Yom Kippur war between Israel, Egypt and Syria. A massive intelligence failure on the part of the Israelis, in the face of tons of evidence that an attack was imminent led to the Israelis being totally blindsided and nearly losing their country.
Now it's happened again.
This report by the New York Times details the fact that Israel had access to the Hamas plan to attack more than a year in advance. Analysts pleaded with IDF leadership to prepare, and were told to stop worrying, the Hamas plan was "aspirational" and not serious.
Reading this article, the level of hubris on the part of the Israeli leadership is astounding - they really thought they were all but immune to a terror attack of this scale, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They were handed the exact plan for the attack and they discarded it as not credible.
Lots of lessons here. The biggest is that if your enemy has the wherewithal and inclination to attack you, and expresses an intention to do so, you should take him seriously.
With that in mind, Israel should be very concerned about Hezbollah and the Palestinian West Bank.
There is no conspiracy here. The Israelis did not want this attack to happen. They so badly wanted it NOT to happen that they convinced themselves it could never happen. And just like after the 1973 war when the Agranat commission was convened to punish the failures that allowed such an attack to happen, there will undoubtedly be another commission once this war is over.
But rightly, Israel is focused now on dismantling Hamas. The blame will be levvied later.
