Europe's Migration Challenge: Rising Asylum Numbers
Europe saw a significant influx of asylum seekers in 2023, with over 264,000 people arriving. This is a 66% increase from the previous year and the highest since 2016. The EU is looking for African countries like Ghana who will agree to accept these migrants, but the migrants refuse to go.
In comparison, if the US had 5 million asylum seekers in the same year, the per capita rate of illegal migration in the US would be about 15 times higher than Europe's.
The Mediterranean crossing, however, remains perilous with over 2,500 deaths last year. Europe's migration policies face challenges, as leaders consider outsourcing asylum processing and the EU works on its New Pact on Migration and Asylum. Critics raise concerns over potential compromises in migrant protections and the effectiveness of these policies in addressing humanitarian, rights, and anti-smuggling aspects of the crisis.
Last August I traveled to Calais, France and met with some South Sudanese Migrants who crossed the Mediterranean and are now stuck trying to cross into the UK.
