Just to clarify something some readers have obviously missed in my article below: China asked Panama to stop transacting exclusively in dollars for Canal transits - in a bid to undermine the USD as a world currency.
This is clear proof of China TRYING to exercise more control over the canal.
PANAMA REFUSED.
I never said China wasn't attempting to exert influence in Panama. What I said was Panama has (so far) not allowed China to succeed at that.
Therefore, Panama is CLEARLY upholding its commitments to keep the canal free of foreign influence (which by the treaty Carter signed, also includes not allowing the US to exert control)
So, Panama is NOT breaking its promises to the US. Quite the contrary.
Panama can't keep anyone from TRYING to control the canal. But if they don't allow those attempts to succeed...Trump should not accuse Panama of breaking the treaty. What would be much better (and likely what Rubio will end up doing) is for the US to COME ALONGSIDE Panama and HELP Panama resist China's efforts.
Bashing Panama in his inaugural speech was clearly counterproductive on this point. But as everyone knows, Trump is Trump. He has good intentions, but is DEFINITELY a Ready, Fire! Aim. Kind of guy. Always has been.
