Hamas Waging Psychological War
This Is How Hamas Defeats Israel in the Psychological Arena
Dr. Yitzhak Mansdorf, an expert in behavioral psychology and psychological warfare at the Jerusalem Center for Foreign and Security Affairs, warns that Hamas is waging a sophisticated conflict against Israel that is not only military but also psychological. “Hamas employs a well-known psychological mechanism: the promise of immediate emotional rewards, such as releasing hostages, overshadows long-term rational considerations. This strategy turns Israeli society itself into a tool to pressure its government,” he explains. He adds, “The cost—strengthening a murderous enemy—is high, but the immediate hope blinds the public.”
Dr. Mansdorf notes that Hamas also succeeds internationally by portraying itself as a helpless victim while holding hostages, initiating wars, and hiding behind civilians. “This is a sophisticated psychological campaign, and Israel must understand the rules of the game and refuse to play by the enemy’s terms,” he says. His conclusion is stark: to truly counter this threat, Israel must build resilience that is not only military but also cognitive—one that distinguishes between genuine morality and emotional manipulation.
