"Having many things to write to you, I did not wish to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full."
(2 John 1:12)
Face-to-face connection is what the Lord created us for—first between us and Him, and second, between one another. Discussions behind keyboards have a time and a place, but we are relational creatures. We communicate not just through words and sentences, but through our body language, tone of voice, and the timing of our speech and responses. Personally, I strongly dislike any communication where we cannot at least hear each other's voice. To me, that is vital for understanding my neighbors and responding accordingly.
This technological age has made us humans lazy. Text-based communication is much more convenient, and it is easier to deal with others because there is no pressure to respond in real time. Instead, you can take hours to craft messages, choosing what to ignore and what to respond to, if you even respond at all!
This has its place for sure—I'm not saying it doesn't—but may we never prioritize these interactions over the way God actually created us to connect. Through technology, we can still have face-to-face interactions and phone calls. It is not the same as being in person, but it is much healthier than the obscurity of texting.
