Fake "Proof" of Nazis in Ukraine
This photo of General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief is going around on twitter as some sort of "gotcha" which apparently "proves" the false claim that Nazis run the military here.
It's false. Here's why.
Ukraine is a SLAVIC country. It was first formed by Norsemen who were making their way south along the Dniper for trade and conquest.
The Slavic religion, an animistic faith, predates Christianity. Some of its runes and symbols are more than 8,000 years old.
The German swastika is descended from these symbols, but that doesn't mean the (much older) symbols have anything to do with Naziism. Quite the opposite, actually.
In souvenir shops here in Kyiv you will find lots of Slavic symbols on trinkets, amulets and such. People here see their older meanings - life, fertility, safety in battle, closeness of family, etcetera.
The rune on General Zaluzhnyi's wrist is not a German swastika. It's probably a charm that denotes family unity, or something close to that.
