US Navy Striking Houthi Positions in Yemen
The United States conducted a second night of strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, a US defense official reported Sunday. Specifics on weapons or targets were unavailable, though explosions were reported in the Amran and Saada governorates near Sanaa.
On Saturday, US fighter jets struck multiple Houthi sites, including weapon storage facilities used to target US and commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, a vital trade route.
The Houthis, aligned with Hamas and Hezbollah in an Iran-led coalition, have escalated attacks against Israel and allies since the Gaza war began. Their actions coincide with Yemen's severe humanitarian crisis, worsened by a civil war that began in 2014 and recent climate-related disasters impacting millions.
The US has launched multiple strikes on Houthi targets over the past 11 months. In October, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin authorized a B-2 stealth bomber strike on the group, a move directed by President Biden to demonstrate consequences for attacks on US interests.
The US has increased its military presence in the region, deploying a carrier strike group, guided missile destroyers, and various aircraft amid escalating regional tensions.
