For years, I perceived God’s love wrongly, and it affected my walk greatly. For I believed He only loved me when I was constantly praying, studying and serving. So whenever I was spiritually "performing," I would be confident He loved me, but when I failed Him, as we all do, I would become deflated and depressed and discouraged.
Thankfully, we don't work/obey to earn God the Father's love, because we have already received it through the Gospel of His Son. When we first believed, the Holy Spirit has poured out God's love into our hearts (Romans 5:5); and now, as His adopted children (Romans 8:15), who are perfectly righteous in Jesus (Romans 5:17), nothing will ever be able to stop Him from loving us, because of the perfect and finished work of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:35-39).
We obey God not to earn His love but because He first loved us on the cross of His Son (1 John 4:19, Romans 5:8). Furthermore, since His love is already in us, through our obedience (inspired by faith) we'll remain/abide in His love in an experiential state of fellowship.
"According as the Father loved Me, I also loved you, remain in My love; if you may keep My commands, you will remain in My love, according as I have kept the commands of My Father, and remain in His love." (John 15:9-10)
